[PaQSO] PaQSO Digest, Vol 61, Issue 8 - K3CR station plaque

Ron, fear not! I was a student at PSU before/during/after the
demolition of the EE units during the summer of 2005, and I was there
when the plaque was removed; it's been a few years, but I might have
even been the one to take it off door. I was the club president at the
time (well, technically president-elect, I guess) and one of the few
club members on campus that summer and took almost daily photographs of
the process of tearing down those two EE units. They were tough
buildings; it took a lot longer to tear them down than they had planned.
I was no longer involved with the club and can't say if the plaque was
ever installed at the new station in the Wagner Building penthouse, but
it definitely did survive the move out of engineering.

73,
Allen, WG3E

You know what would make an appropriate Special Event Station for this
year?

K3CR up at Penn State. Direct descendant of the wireless station put on
the
air by the EE Department in December 1909, so this is their 100th
Anniversary coming up. They were first licensed as 8XE in 1912, but
then,
so were all of the other Pioneer wireless stations of the time.

For that matter, the Nittany ARC Gilbert L. Crosley Memorial Station,
W3YA,
would also work, as it is also a direct descendant of the pioneer that
became 8XE.

But I'm willing to bet nobody thought of it in time. Pity.

[And, pardon the digression, I sure hope that plaque from the Class of
1912
radio tower that was on the K3CR station door, inside of the old 202
Engineering Unit "E" QTH, survived the move of the station subsequent to
the
demolition of the building; who knows anymore?]

I'll second that motion! :-) Would that make it New School since it's
never been done before?

I like the idea of K3CR. Particularly since they would be unlikely to
come up QRP, which I think is a poor idea. I have always felt the
receiving station should get the bonus points when working a QRP
station.
?
Looking forward to Oct.

I know you're looking for a simple SES this year; however, I would offer
the notion that there are multiple "commonwealth" campuses in
PA?associated with Penn State.? I can easily imagine as system where
folks at the main campus work K3YA; however, there may be special points
for working commonwealth campuses, some of which have their own stations
on the air.

... just a thought,
Charlie, WA3KVN
