But shouldn't us SO stations be given a shot at being the SES? Even us low power SO's? Even us low power SO's set up portable in Penns Woods with wire antennae?

Thanks for the kind words, Bill.  I thought so too when I formed the
plan, and so did MANY contestants overwhelmingly agree when writing to me
privately after last years effort by DLARC's W3OK SES.
It wasn't intended to be a model program, but one that would produce a
respectable opportunity to log a SES during the rock-bottom of an already
terrible Solar Cycle, and I'm convinced we delivered that last October for
scores of participants.
Few (if any?) records were broken in any category, even with so many
chances to secure lots of Bonus Points, so it certainly wasn't over the top to
offer all those points.  I believe conditions justified the effort, which by
the way, many bright op's recognized was quite a logistical undertaking to
prevent operating conflicts.
It also gave our Club a great boost in morale and camaraderie for weeks
leading up to the event.  It is no small coincidence that our Membership has
nearly doubled in the last 16 months to now well over 200.  I wonder how
many other Clubs are growing?

We are also looking forward to see who is chosen to be 2009's Bonus
Station.  With the DLARC's HF'ers back to business as usual this year, we will
once again be a force to be reckoned with in the Club category.
