Mike,
Good Job. I applaud your efforts. I'll play by the rules you set,
whatever they are.
Here's my comments about the bonus station.
To me, it's not a big addition to the score to work the bonus station
if it is one of 500 q's in my log. Yet somehow, there is always a
little celebration around the shack when one of the operators work it.
Now matter how fast the run is going, it's fun to take the headphones
off for a split second and holler out, "I JUST WORKED THE BONUS
STATION!!!".
Yes, I view the bonus station as a "good thing."
What if the bonus station is running 5 watts in a state park? Well
alrighty then! We just gotta try a little harder, but then again, so
must everyone.
What if they are in multiple locations? I do like a station to be in
one place, under the control of, well, a control operator. Whoever is
the holder of the bonus callsign should be where the operation is.
Now I'm going to have some fun. I nominate W3TDF to be the bonus
station. OK, so I know this isn't an elected position, but here's what
I'm thinking. Ray is ALWAYS THERE. He gets big scores because he gives
out LOTS OF Qs. ((Look at your logs, folks. He's probably in everyone's
logs two or three times each year, and that's without even trying!))
And best of all, he is "THE GRUMP". What better person to give out
bonus points for the Friendly QSO Party?
Best wishes,
JP
N3GWR
In other news, I will say to all that this station will focus on SSB
and CW operation in the HF bands. An effort was made to utilize VHF and
try PSK31 and it was found to scatter our efforts. Those modes are in
the rules, but not much fun for us. I'm sure there will be a group of
folks saying "look for me on VHF" or "look for me on the (new) digital
modes". How nice for them.
