[PaQSO] V/UHF Operating

Gentlefolks,

I think we've seen enough anecdotal evidence here to support the idea that there IS indeed a potential -- in some areas a vast potential -- of VHF & UHF operators that could enhance the contest.

And, as some others have pointed out, sometimes it appears to be a futile effort to go to the trouble of setting up a V/UHF operating position, and have few or any to contact.

So what to do?

Here are some thoughts, things that ALL of us (NOT just the Nittany ARC) can do:

1. Start promoting the contest to those who have an interest in VHF & UHF operating. Start now. Get them thinking about it.

2. Those of us who are members of VHF oriented clubs, including repeater support organizations, should start seeing if there is some interest amongst those club memberships. Easy to do in some clubs (such as Steel City and Nittany) where there is already an active V/UHF operating & contesting contingent. What about the rest? (Anyone on the list who's a PackRat?)

3. Start trying to figure out some specific times and frequencies to use as "listen" times. These don't have to be official, or even in the rules, at least not yet. They could be as simple as "even hours: listen on 6 meters on 50.1xx at :15 after the hour, 2 meters on 144.2xx at :45; odd hours, listen on 146.55 at :15 and :45" or something like this. Or pick specific hours (such as 2 PM, 4 PM, etc) to listen on specific bands and modes. You get the idea!

4. If you get enough interest in your local club or clubs, don't wait for an official plaque from Nittany ARC. Offer an award of your own. Even a certificate and a $10 gift certificate to McD's! Use your imagination!

Think positively, and it can be done!

What say you?
