As Joe hinted in an earlier post we did not turn our windshield wipers off
until 0200 UTC. And thanks to a very different aspect of Mother Nature we
only heard a dozen PA stations in the first two hours. We thought we were in
for a very miserable weekend. But we were wrong! In spite of all the adverse
conditions it was a very productive and enjoyable weekend.
The only real bugaboo we had all weekend was the laptop. For those of you
who suffered through periods of choppy CW from our station Sunday morning we
apologize for the annoyance. It took us a little while to figure it out but
we were able to resolve it. Because of the unpredictable timing in a PC I
have never liked them for generating CW. But Windows can aggrevate the
already tenable situation even more by misbehaving very badly when an
expected network is missing. At any rate, we apologize for the technical
problem.
To W1NN, this "marauding Pennsylvania mobile team" (both PSU grads) is all
too willing to accept victory "in a very gentlemanly fashion" as you put it.
We would not think of behaving in any less a manner. ;-) But we are
extremely glad that you and K8MR did not have to hide behind any trees on
Sunday morning - at least, not for the reason that you mistakenly thought
you might have to. We are - Penn State!
In the anecdote department, Joe and I were operating at a state park elk
observation site on Sunday afternoon. As anyone who has ever operated HF as
a mobile knows you can very easily elicit curious stares and more. During
the couple of hours we spent there many people came to see elk wandering in
the field and usually left within 10 minutes disappointed when they
discovered that there were none were to be found. While walking around and
stretching my legs at one point a pair of middle-aged women approached me
and asked: "What are you tracking?" After I responded with a very puzzled
"huh?", she went on to say: "Oh, we thought you are tracking the elk. We
heard the beeps coming from your car." I didn't know what to say. Not
wanting to get into the details of our operation or insult her, I managed to
respond with a very weak: "No, ma'm, it doesn't have anything to do with the
elk."
