First, I use NA software, and second, I'm assuming that when I work a county
line operation under the new rule I give them only one serial number.
Next, I enter that contact with the county abbreviation appended to the
call. Let's say Ed, WA3SES, is on the CMB and WES county line. I would log
him twice.....WA3SES/CMB then WA3SES/WES, each with it's own, unique serial
number. I would do this for each band and mode on which I work him.
By logging WA3SES twice, once as /CMB and once as /WES, any software I'm
aware of will give you credit for two qsos. Under the previous rules, as I
understand them, you were only allowed credit for one qso. So you would either
have to go back and somehow delete the credit for the second "qso", or else
just claim it and make the log checkers adjust your score. I suspect that many
of these second qsos just passed through log checking process, and received
credit anyway. The new rule just adapts to this, and goes ahead and allows
credit for the second entry.
Although the PA committee may not yet be there, contest log checking is
evolving to a situation where participants really just send raw data in the form
of a log (in Cabrillo format), and the sponsor's computer checks and scores
it. ARRL, CQ, and most other major contest sponsors are already to this
point. It's reasonable to assume that the PaQP will eventually be there as well,
so now's as good a time as any to make the switch.
Things could be even better, or worse, depending on your view: In the
Illinois QSO Party, credit is given to both stations for county line qsos. If a
county line station works another county line station, both get 4 qsos worth
of credit. Since Illinois has lots of counties with straight lines for
borders, and corners where four counties come together, if a 4 corner station works
another 4 corner station, that's worth the equivilent of 16 qsos for a
single contact!
