The New England QSO party uses a 5-letter location designator, I think, with
3 letters for county and 2 for state. I'd look to that contest's mults. for
an idea.

<<why not have the event earlier in the year . . . such as February or
March?? . . . . I know I'd enjoy being inside operating in March or Feb
more than in May. When it's warm in spring (May) people are itching to
get outside, who wants to be inside missing out the warm sunshine?>>

Keep in mind that there are several MAJOR contests in Feb./March (ARRL DX,
both phone and CW, and WPX-phone) as well as some smaller ones
(see:www.contesting.com). I think the VA QSO party is already held in March.
Another consideration is weather. We're still subject to snowstorms in March
and even if it doesn't snow, the temps aren't encouraging of portable
operations from some of the less populated mountainous counties.
