I'm telling you all, this man missed his calling as he is by all means the
statistician extraordinaire!
The only piece of data that really "shocked" me is that LAN made the "Top 15
rarest list" in 3 of the past 5 years. I honestly cannot recall a year that
LAN didn't seem to be exceptionally well represented. Then again, like Ed
points out, when those one or two stations that normally represent any given
county don't show up, that county is all of a sudden rare.

I did a quick look at the 15 rarest countys for 1997 to 2001. (2002 data
not yet available).
NOTE that the rankings are based on number of points from each county, and,
of course, this comes from "logs submitted" which may be different from
actual, since some logs are, surely, not submitted.
Three countys made the "Top 15 rarest county list" in 4 of the past 5
years;
CLA, (3rd, 3rd, 9th and 13th), NUM (5th, 7th, 13th and 14th) and PER (4th,
11th, 12th and 14th)
So none of these three counties were the "rarest" in any ONE of those 5
years, but they were "on the list" most often.
In fact, most county's that are the rarest one year, don't even make the
top 15 list the next year.
Examples:
In 1997 BUT was rarest, but BUT (I couldn't stop myself) did not make the
list in 1998 (and in point of fact, I seem to recall previous mention that
this occurred because of one or two logs that were not submitted).
In 1999 FRA was the rarest, but did not make the list in 2000.
In 2000 INN was the rarest, but did not make the list in 2001.
FRA is the exception to the rule...FRA was #1 rarest in both 1998 and 1999.
That is the only one to even make the list the next year.
In 2001 POT was the rarest....we'll have to wait a few more weeks to see
how POT fared in 2002.
Six countys made the "Top 15 rarest list" in 3 of the past 5 years:
ELK, FAY, FUL, LAN, SNY and UNI.
15 countys made the list twice and an additional 15 made the list once.
That's 38 of the 67 counties on the list at one time or another. It might
me just as interesting to see the list of the 29 that HAVE NOT been on the
list in the past 5 years.
No county made the list all 5 years. (Makes sense since the portable, rover
and mobile ops are always looking at rarity "last" year as the place to go
"this" year)
But you could look at rarity another way, that being the "average" rarity.
Doing that, Franklin "bubbles" up to #2. That's because it was #1 rarest
county twice, 1998 and 1999. And even though it was not on the list the
other 3 years, "on average" it still comes out to #2.
#1 via this method is still CLA.
VEN, SNY and INN round out the top 5 via the average method.
NUM comes in a #8 and PER comes in at #12 via this method.
SUMMARY:
**CLA always seems to be worth consideration
***My suggestion on how to be rare:
Go to a "usually" rare county, do not turn on your radio until
about the 10th or 11th hour of the contest. Then, listen on 80
phone around 10 or 11 pm to see what county everyone is
looking for. With luck it's your county and you can start transmitting
and watch the pileups materialize.(Yeah........fat chance)
***To paraphrase an old saying: A county is rare if no one
goes there (there's a revelation, huh??). Another way of saying
that is "if you decide to go to a county because it usually rare,
the mere fact of your presence means it's not going to be rare".
**There are about 8 to 10 countys that will "instantly" become rare
if one station that normally activates that county can't get on the air.
If you can determine which station/which county that might be this
year, you'll have a jump on things.
Nothing earth shaking......pretty intuitive......but I had fun looking at
it.

All,
My wife's alma mata (Lycoming College) homecoming is the weekend after the
PA
QSO party this year. Since its her 20th, there are no excuses for her not
going. And to promote domestic tranquility, I have to yield on this. But
the
good sense of the college's alumni office avoids all arguments other than I
could be doing a lot of driving around Pennsylvania over two weekends.
Now, where do I go? I could just stay home in BUX. If nobody in the
family
bothers me, I can do a bang up job from there. One member of Warminster
ARC has
asked if I can go to POT. I could always go back to CLI. Decisions,
decisions.
Only 7 months, 6 days, 8 minutes and 2 seconds to go!
