>Quick question for the rules guys....If I am stopped
(fixed) mobile, and crank out the 33 foot whip
(military type, mounted on the AB450 where my 20 foot
NVIS is mounted now), would that still be mobile, or
would that turn me into a rover for that county?
Reason being is that 160 almost plays with the big
whip...

Bill,
This is one of those subjects that comes up every
couple of years.
The rules simply say "mobile stations must be truly
mobile." I suppose there is room for some interpretation
but to me this means that you should be able to drive
your vehicle down the highway at highway speed, and
that you can't make any changes to your vehicle including
its antennas when you are stopped. This would limit =
a mobile to using an antenna that is no higher than the 14 =
some feet that will fit under a bridge overpass. =
Regarding 160 Meter operation, I use a dedicated 160
meter mobile antenna made by Transel Technologies =
in Harveysburg, Ohio (bought in 1996 and used only =
in the PAQP). It gets out somewhat but the bandwidth without =
retuning is about 10 khz at best. It would be quite a struggle
for a QRP station, I imagine. =
GL and drive safely this year, Bill.
