Bob,
What you are referring to is the Breezeshooter's 10 Meter Groundwave
contest. It was originally held in November around Thanksgiving (moved back
one week from the Saturday evening before to the Saturday evening after). A
few years ago, after a one year trial of having it twice, it moved to
February. This year, it was split by modes -- CW on the 4th Saturday of
February, Phone on the 4th Saturday of March. (I don't know if the 2003
will stay split or whatever).
More details on the Groundwave can be found at the Breezeshooter's web site,
www.breezeshooters.net, run by N3UE.
Anyway, the Groundwave was originally centered on a 150 mile radius of the
Point in downtown Pittsburgh (they've since changed from circles to a
grid-square system, with the center grid 25 also centered on the Point). If
you look at a map of PA, it's reasonable to assume that a similar system
could be used with Penn State's Old Main lawn, the geographic center of the
state, as the center point. So a 10 meter only Pa QP type contest could
work.
Let me also add that my club (the Wireless Association of South Hills) has
for the last two years run a 2 meter simplex contest on a Saturday evening
in mid January, with a good bit of success (and I know that some of the
Philadelphia area clubs have adapted our contest into a similar one later in
the winter, and the Boulder CO club and a few others are doing something
similar). I've worked distances from my home of 100 miles on 2 M simplex
during the WASH 'test, and I'm only running 45 watts into a dual band
vertical. So a VHF PaQP is possible.
Which brings me to one question:
Who gets the honor of organizing one of these & running them?

Subject: [PaQSO] Pa-10M Groundwave Contest
Some years back I stumbled onto a flurry of activity one evening...turned
out to be the PA Ten Meter Groundwave Contest run by a group out of the
Pgh Area. What a blast!!!!.
At the time, I was located midway between Cleveland and Columbus OHIO, 105
miles due west of the Pa line. With a kw to a KT-34XA at 60 ft, I worked
c 50 Pa stations, the farthest east being in Somerset, another 85 miles
into
Pa..
What an enjoyable few hours on a cold Friday night, for an old Pa boy.
I didnt realize direct/ground wave could go so far!
I could see the same type contest held in the Hbg and Philly areas with
great success.
