The quick, general answer is you will need a multimode TNC (modem) that has
Pactor.
You will need communications software. You might already have a modem
program
in your PC. Most conventional modem programs will operate with
packet/pactor, after making
a few changes. After playing with that, shop for a Pactor/Packet specific
program.
On the hardware side, Kantronics and other companies make TNCs. You will
need a
serial connection between the TNC and your laptop. Some systems may require
an actual
COM-1 or COM-2 serial hookup, rather than a USB-to-serial adaptor. You may
have to go to
device manager (assuming Windows 2000) and make changes to the serial port.
You will need a PTT, transmit audio and receive audio connection between the
transceiver and TNC. I recommend using a rear-panel accessory connector
since in most radios, these provide flat or fixed audio regardless of the
speaker or mike settings. Going in the front mike connector usually means
having to make adjustments when you change from phone to data.
In some radios, leaving a TNC connected may cause distortion on your
transmitted SSB signal. You'll need to unplug or do some filtering.
RX and TX audio levels will have to be set. This may need to be done in the
TNC by changing jumpers or adjusting pots, or by software command. The mark
and space tones should be equal amplitude and not overdrive or distort.
Transceivers have different ratings and duty cycles. RTTY operation is
continuous and would require reducing TX power more than you might with
pactor... check the TX power rating for pactor in your radio. If not sure,
then use the RTTY rating.

Subject: [Pactor] New to pactor...want to setup system
Hello to everyone on the pactor reflector.
I'm new to pactor. So with my eyes and ears wide open, I'm ready to learn
everything about it.
The equipment I have so far is a yaesu ft-301 [analog dial], which I use in
phone mode and a laptop computer. What other pieces of equipment do I need?
I guess that's it for now, I'll worry about the finer things as I go along.
Thanks for your help.
Hart
