Nothing and that wasn't the problem. The problem was using a packet program 
(xcall, a GUI version of call) that uses the built in kernel ax25.
There is only one mention of minicom (which could talk to the TNC). The rest 
of the post is about using kernel ax25 (with a TNC). That means either KISS 
or 6pack.
If that's still not clear, imagine you were trying to get a packet program to 
work that need to use flex or BPQ. You could use a dumb terminal to talk to 
the TNC, but your program didn't work. Your problem is getting BPQ or flex to 
work. Not with your dumb terminal.
