Gary, having lived in Europe for 12 years, I much prefer the tax system in
the US.
The French, in particular, squeeze every last Euro out of its residents.
Paypal payments, gift or not, are taxed as
personal income. Article 1649 of the Code général des impôts levies a 1500
Euro fine for non-payment on EACH offense, our valiant DXpeditonaries
are required to cough up 20% VAT on each of those QSL payments. Paypal
Europe, based in Luxembourg, participates in the shakedown,
they are required by EU treaty to report all account transactions to each
member state's coffer keeper.
A sad state of affairs for a country that provided us with the Statue of
Liberty, and made famous the cheer "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité"
But heck, I guess that's the price paid for a 35-hour work-week and free
methadone at the local clinic
