I received the following message from Jim Shideler, W5JCS:

Joe Garland, WA5FLT, became a Silent Key, Saturday night after a long fight with cancer.

Joe was a Charter IOOK (International Order Of Krazies) Vice-President and so enjoyed his many IOOK brothers and sisters.

Joe was a very active ham.  He attended the Dayton Ham Vention each year, for over forty years, and was planning on attending again in 2022.  In more recent years due to band conditions and his health Joe has not checked into the IOOK nets as often as he would have liked.  He always listened and would text me asking if I listened and sharing with me who he heard checking into the net.

Joe had several ham projects he was working on.  He enjoyed remoting his HF station and sharing the link with friends.

When Joe got out of school, he went to work for Western Electric in management positions.  He retired in the nineties and went into law enforcement which he enjoyed.  Joe was always one to help people.

Joe married his wonderful wife Cathy, and they shared many years together.  He said many times how blessed he was to have her in his life.

Joe wanted his body to be given for medical research.

When an obituary is available, we will share it with the IOOK and others.
