There are quite a few Big Boys still in existence of the 25 that were
built. But until a few years ago, they were all just stuffed and
mounted in parks. UP looked at, I guess, all of them and decided that
the one that had been stuff/mounted in Pomona, Calif, had had the
least environmental (or other) damage and that's the one that they
got. Plenty of video around of it's extrication from the park where
it lived and then its subsequent trip back to Cheyenne, Wyo, for its
overhaul.
As I think I noted here before, UP also rosters a 4-6-6-4 Challenger
(UP 3985) and a 4-8-4 Northern (UP 844). I think I read that the
former is being overhauled again (about 30 years ago, the FRA updated
boiler rules for steam engines and steam engines still need periodic
teardowns) while the latter -- which has never been retired -- comes
out to work or pull specials every once in a while. UPRR.com has a
link to their heritage locomotive fleet website. They also have an
A-B-A set of E9s and a DDA40X "Centennial", all Diesel, not to mention
a couple trains' worth of passenger cars.
None of these locomotives were HF-equipped.
