Darell was always as nice as could be to me and very encouraging. The
tour he gave me of ICM was simply wonderful, with lots of interesting
history about not only ICM, but Oklahoma City, too. I noted that many of
the rooms in the ICM facility seemed to have some of the most secure
doors I'd ever seen. He explained that it was because they had been used
from the 1920s into the 1950s as film archive storage rooms and that a
lot of the film base was nitrate-based for the older works. That meant
it would burn furiously should a fire break out, and fires did occur.
The vaults were intended to contain any fires to only the affected vault
-- very thick walls separated each "room."

He showed me a 1 kHz crystal on display that was used to show the
various modes of the crystal's vibration. A strobe light would flash at
something like 1000.5 Hz and so would essentially freeze the crystal's
shape and position such that it appeared to move very slowly and people
could see that crystals truly do move, bend, and change shape. The place
also had many model aircraft in it: the owner of ICM was a pilot and a
big aviation fan. Darell explained the owner was an avid remote control
model aircraft flier as well.

I didn't get to see Darell very often but was always happy when I did.
I'll miss him.

73,

Kim N5OP
