Hi Gene, I started with a halicrafters ht37 transmiter and a collins
75a4 receiver used, since then I have used kenwood, icom, yaesu, and
ten-tec. All of them have their good and bad points. I like kenwood and
ten-tec myself , but would love to try a elecraft k3. My advice is to find
a good used rig that he can afford, and after being on the air for a while,
he will figure out what he wants in a radio. Visit some other stations and
see how they sound, the receiver is what I look for, and service for the
rig if need repair. Invest in the best antenna he can afford and has space
for, that is 90% of the station.
I'm probably not much help, but everyone has their own favorite radio
brand. I have a couple of kenwoods that are at least 35 to 37 years old,
and they still work. Have a kenwood ts480hx I use mobile, and like it
also, I use Ten-Tec also, may not be as good as some others, but their
american made, and the service is very good if need help with repairs etc.
    Good Luck
WQ5R Gary
    And again congratulations
