My first rig was a Yaesu FT-2000. I have had it for 2 years and there are
still some capabilities I have not used. My 2nd rig (for Field Day) is a
Yaesu FT-950. From everyone I have talked to this is a very capable
starter rig and can be had new for just over $1100. I purchased mine at
Dayton last year and after the rebate, etc., it was $925 delivered. Both
of those rigs will do everthing he could want (and all the things you
listed!).
