I am glad that you asked for comments. I was extremely upset that I went to
all the trouble to setup a portable dipole which should have performed very
well, certainly better than a mobile whip antenna, only to find that the
bands were so crowded that I could not get anywhere when I tried to call CQ.
I gave up and went home.
It is our QSO party and we make the rules. Who says we must only operate on
the weekend? March is a horrible month to operate on weekends. First weekend
is ARRL DX so it is out. Second weekend is Green Country Hamfest, so it is
eliminated. Third is all the mess with the Russian DX and other QSO parties
so it is out. And the last weekend in March is the CQ WPX contest.
My suggestion is to look at doing something like what the Route 66 Special
Event Stations do. Why not have the OK QSO party during the week and the
weekend! I would like to go out camping and run the OK QSO party from some
of our state parks during the week. Make the hours of the QSO party more
open. Many nearby states would like to work us on the low bands during the
evening hours. I would also suggest looking at the months of February or
April instead of March.
That's my 2 cents,
