Hi, Kim:
Thanks much! I learned more in those few sentences than in all the "weather
person" chats on TV.
BTW, I taught an evening class for OSU over in Tulsa. We missed two
sessions, which really threw things out of kilter. I presently teach online
courses for the OSU Department of Music. I can work from home, but the
course preparation is something else.
Stay warm!
73,
Bill, N5TU

These are particularly unusual circumstances! Polar (not merely
arctic) air is set in place with a fresh snow pack, light or calm winds and
clear skies. This maximizes IR radiation (ice is a superb radiator at these
far IR wavelengths) and we get extremely shallow, extremely cold layers at
ground level.
I have two thermometers at my QTH: one at about 10 m up my tower, and one at
about 1.5 m out by my wife's garden. At 10 m, the lowest temperature was 0F.
At 1.5 m, it was -4F. That's a magnificent inversion with a stunning lapse
rate (change of temperature with
height) of +144 deg F per 1000 ft! Obviously, the layer wasn't 1000 ft
deep, but that's a very strong inversion, all driven by radiation!
