Hi John and Tim,
John I would say so, I still have the Pro 3 here with the 7700. I didn't
lose Dual Watch since I still have the Pro 3, but for my operating I didn't
find it very useful. On chasing weak DX on 40m CW you really need or I need
a separate sub receiver to where I can split the audio out from the DX
station to who is working the DX in each ear cup. With Dual Watch is a
mixture of the two VFOs and adds 3 dB of noise right off the bat. On loud
net like signals or on quiet bands then great I could use DW, but on the
lower bands I went back to using the XFC button even on the Pro 3. I tried
for two years to figure out DW and finally gave up. What would have been a
true sub receiver is used for the bandscope. Since the display is use for
more than just a bandscope, I wouldn't trade either to go back to my Inraded
Yaesu, but I will admit missing the true sub receiver at times.
Here is what you get from a good Pro 3 to a 7700. Better break-in, QSK is
as good as some of my QRP rigs (like old TenTec rigs), no click or pops in
the headphones using QSK. 200 watts (6m operators love the extra power) I
find I use the amp less on the other bands as well. The receiver is indeed
better with 3 roofing filters the Pro 3 doesn't have, it only has one. Tone
controls for receive as well as transmit, the sound is very much improved.
Digital features are much better, you can hook up a keyboard and go on PSK
or RTTY without a computer. DIG-SEL for to improve front end filtering.
APF is back for CW operation. I am sure there is much more, but this is all
I can think of now. The article is on the ARRL web right now.
John I know you were mainly asking Tim. He is indeed one of the experts we
have and he is a better op than I ever will be. Ditto for his station, but
thought I would throw my two cents in. Really worth only a penny, hi.
