[OKDXA] K3

Hi, Coy:
I took delivery of my K3 in early May. It is the best rig I have ever
owned. For comparison, I have had Orion I, FT-1000 MP Mk V, FT-2000, and
IC-756 Pro II. None of them comes close in reliability, dynamic range, etc.
Of course, 99 percent of my operating is CW, and the Japanese rigs are
oriented toward SSB.
The only rig that is close is my old Drake C-line, which has most of the
Sherwood mods installed.
The "ears" on the K3 are incredible. Right now, I'm still using my R8
vertical, and I can hear signals that are right down in the noise, even if
they can't hear me when I'm running high power. The internal system noise
(a big problem with Yaesu) is nonexistent. One can dial the DSP filtering
down to 50 Hz with no ringing, and the crystal filters are tight.
I have not added the sub-receiver yet, but I will do it soon. I did buy an
LP-PAN from N8LP, and it is way better than any of the built-in pan adapters
in the other rigs. (Ten-Tec's is a joke.) I have also run CW Skimmer,
which is a hoot. It copies stations that are below the noise level. I'm
not sure it's the cure-all some people fear it is.
Support is great. The people at Elecraft are service-oriented, although I
have had no major problems (what I have had resulted from operator error).
Some of the sharper folks in this regard include Wayne and the other
Elecraft designers, Larry, N8LP, and Joe, W4TV.
The K3 is not for everybody. It's small in size, but it does everything a
serious operator needs, and it does those things well.
If you have more questions, please let me know.

I understand several OKDXA members hae bought K3's. I'm looking for a
performance evaluation both for contesting and DXing.
