[OKDXA] Revoltin' development...

Kim and Jim,

Thanks for the info on MRC Crane. I have never heard of them, but surely
they do business here in STW.

I'm guessing, but the height I probably need is 35 - 40 feet. My rotor is a
Yaesu G-2800 SDX. It has worked like a champ for many years under some
really stressful conditions. I can't complain a bit about it. The Yaesu
rep encouraged me to take it apart and fix it myself (none of the usual
rotor guys will touch a Yaesu). He did give a few hints, but said it sounds
like a broken gear, bad motor, starting capacitor, or perhaps just the
bearings needing cleaned and greased.

To be able to simply slip in another one while MRC is here would set me back
roughly $1300. If I were going to do that, I'd also consider the Orion 2800
for $1500. It seems that they have been getting some high recs. Not sure
if any of our OKDXA gang has used them.

Well, in three weeks or so, I'll get serious about it. I appreciate all the
advice and help. Thanks!

73 Ken K5KC

I have used MRC at least 10 times myself. There has to be some one in the
STW area. MRC is called a lifting company meaning they lift air conditions
and such to rooftops. Their cranes are on flatbed trucks that can drive
into my back yard. They have a cage that attaches to the crane that can
lift two people and antennas.

Yikes, Ken!

What kind of rotor is it? I've used MRC Crane to get to my antennas
without removing them. I'm not sure where you are. but MRC costs
about $100/hr plus transit time. I also don't know what your
instllation is like, but I've replaced my rotor with antennas in
place on dead-calm days using some straps to secure the bottom of the
mast. This can only work on dead-calm days, but it kept me from
removing all the antennas. I have 8 ft of mast extending from the top
of the tower. A KLM KT34A, *not* the XA, at the top of the mast, a
WARC dipole and a 2m corner reflector near the middle and a 40 m 2el
near the bottom.

If you need more details, I can provide them. It may not work for you
but it saved me days of grief a couple of times.
