Well, the CQ WW Phone 160 Meter Contest is over for another year. This year
was my best showing in a 160 meter contest but I was still a bit
disappointed in my results. I only worked 7 hours of the contest. Friday
night was fantastic. I had a couple hours that I ran 120 Q's and hour. It
was all downhill after that! Conditions were much worse as signals were
much weaker and the noise was much higher. But I managed 556 contacts on
160 meters with 52 states and provinces and 11 countries, 13 counting the
U.S. and Canada. It gave me a final score of 79,065 points. I think that
for as little time I put into it I had a decent score and I should be in the
top 200 contestants overall, including the multi-ops. The new antenna
worked very well. I will put a second one up 90 degrees offset to this one.
I got 2 new 160 meter countries out of it for a total of 51 worked on that
band now. I also picked up one new state on 160. It was really fun on
Friday night and was drudgery the rest of the time. Sunday was very slow
both in the morning and evening. The noise was very bad on Sunday. I
worked a bunch of folks from Oklahoma and Mississippi this year. I know
K5YAA has his antenna on the ground and I did not hear him. For my first
semi-serious effort in a 160 meter contest I think I did fairly well.
