Over the last several weeks the District K office has received calls about missed trash pick ups. Please be assured our office continues to relay these concerns to the Solid Waste Department's management, along with advocating for continued communication from the Department to the community and Council office, and for consistency with the City's trash (household, recycling, yard waste, and heavy trash) schedule.
As a council body the City's leadership approved the purchase of new trash vehicles and the lease of vehicles until those we purchased arrive this fall. These steps were necessary to replace the outdated fleet that was exhausted from 7 day a week service post hurricane Harvey. The Department has also experienced a loss of drivers to the private market and is currently hiring CDL drivers. If you know anyone interested in driving for the COH please encourage them to to apply. http://www.houstontx.gov/hr/careers.html
Thank you for continuing to report these occurrences to 311 Houston for documentation purposes and contacting our office to share the service request number and corresponding home address. Though working seven days a week, the department is currently roughly two weeks behind it's normal pick up schedule for heavy trash removal.
Again, the City thanks you for your continued patience as the Solid Waste Department works to build back to normal operations.
To learn more about the Solid Waste Department, read the department's latest updates, and confirm your normal trash service schedule visit the link below.

Have you visited the mural along the Sims Bayou Greenway yet? Unveiling the newest mural in District K, along Sims Bayou on May 16th was extra special. I’m so grateful to everyone that played a part in making the celebration, on what would have been CM Green’s 54th birthday, extra special.
For those of you who were not able to attend the event, check out the video to see how the mural came to life, using the web link below. Special thanks to UpArt Studio and the artist Gelson D. Lemus.

I encourage everyone to take a walk, bike or scooter ride along this beautiful community space. To ensure your family enjoys time along the bayou safely, the District K office has purchased ATV beach cruisers for the local HPD beat to use as they patrol along Sims Bayou. We want to see your pictures along the trail. Email us and we will add them to our newsletter each month. Enjoy!

On Thursday, June 20, 2019, Mayor Turner announced that five new neighborhoods are being added to the Complete Communities initiative. We are excited that Fort Bend Houston is on the list. The Complete Community designation highlights each area for public private partnerships.
We look forward to continuing to work with our Fort Bend Houston neighbors during the public engagement process.

Glenshire Radio Club Field Day
Thank you Ralph Phillips for the invitation to join you and the members of your radio club at the Field Day in Glenshire neighborhood. I enjoyed visiting and learning more about "after storm" communications. Seeing the simple wire antennas and how your group was able to communicate with the radios you built was fascinating. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to refresh my memory of morse code. Neighbors were also provided important hurricane preparedness materials from CERT. We have all types of talent and services in District K.

Our June Neighborhood 101 was an informative seminar discussing City of Houston Municipal Code Chapter 19 and what you need to know if you are considering a home elevation. It’s important for Houstonians to know their risks and how to help ensure we reduce flood risks as we continue to grow as a city.
If you were not able to attend this workshop or the previous workshops (listed below) but would like a copy of the video, please contact our office and we will be sure to share the footage with you.
