A friend ‘s son is going on the road for an extended tie, most of it in isolated areas.
I will recommend he get a license, and also give some information on solar panels.
Any other suggestions???
Ralph

Subject: Seeking knowledge on electronics for the boonies
Ralph,
I think I mentioned that our son, Jonathan, will be trekking from NC > AZ > TX > AZ > AK starting in April.
The AZ > TX > AZ is by air; otherwise, by truck.
The AZ > AK portion is 3,500 miles by truck.
He is in the process of outfitting his truck for both the trek as well as being his residence when in AK for the summer.
Once in AK he will have access to 115V receptacles for power. However, with housing situation, he is likely to be living out of his truck, probably combo truck bed shell and attached awning tent.
During the long distance travels now and for future treks, he is trying to come up with a best combination to be portable storage inside truck and yet power up handhelds and occasional use of laptop [the late mainly for occasional internet connection, not for heavy downloads like movies.]
It came to me that some of you ham folks may have some ideas for best combination of costs, quality, etc. for things like Solar Panels, Storage Battery[s], Inverters, Lights, etc. So, if you think they may, please pass this along.
One particular subset: he will be an outdoor guide in the outback in AK. Most times with no cell phone service. We are considering getting him some handheld device that will serve for communications and location reporting in these remote areas. So far, we're thinking of Satellite Phone, but I don't know much. I hear unverified things like expensive to buy, expensive talk or date plans, maybe limited service that far north from satellite coverage. I'm seeing a lot that seem very primitive: just a few short prerecorded texts, not voice, like:
I'm okay
Send help.
Adding tracking location also seems pricey: one place shows $60 install, plus $30/month for 220 position reports.
So again, if anyone you knows may have knowledge, please send this their way.
Thanks,
Walter Hyde
