All,
We discussed working with Scouts at the this morning's club meeting and agreed it is something we want to do as a club.
As we finished up, I received a call from the chair of the "international activities committee" for Houston area scouts.
He likes the idea and wants us to set up alongside the Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) folks at scout HQ on TC Jester at 610.
The event is October 17 and runs 10am -3pm
we can start setting up at 0800.
The building and parking area has a large footprint, but no easy access to trees.
MARK ... you were there last year, what do you suggest for antennas?
I am thinking we will probably have to use vertical antennas or buddi-pole dipoles.
Who can provide 2m/40cm for the VHF/UHF radio? (I have j-poles we can use if needed, just need to find a good mount)
Don't forget about the Webelos Woods scout day camp Oct 24 .... St. Paul's Presb. Church (Bellaire at hwy 59)
Please provide feed back to Rusty and me on activities, you availability, and equipment you can bring.
This will be a mnajor topic at the September club meeting.
Thanks,
ralph ke5hdf

Dave,
The timing of your call this morning was perfect as the club had just finished discussing our hopes for working with scouts. (I will assume that was your plan....)
We will set up a station Saturday Oct 17 at our host organization (Oak Forst Masonic Lodge) and another at SHAC HQ on TC Jester @ 610.
We have some initial thoughts of what to provide for the event, but have not yet sorted out if we will have it all at both locations or split between the two. We will finalize plans at our September meeting.
Here is an outline of what we may be able to do:
a.. 2M/70cm voice activity (local messages)
b.. 20M voice activity (interstate and international messages)
c.. PSK31 station (text messages using PC and radio)
d.. world/US maps to show locations we contact
e.. have 2 or 3 morse practice keys/sounders and explain the code
f.. open an old tube type recvr and modern rig to show the differences
g.. post the amateur radio mission statement (basically service and be prepared)
h.. describe how amateur radio and scouting have similar goals & can complement each other
i.. explain what amateur radio is and the stuff we do
j.. describe how it works WITH current social media or when social media fails
k.. hang poster showing careers that use skills you can learn in amateur radio
l.. display/describe the 3 merit badge books related to amateur radio (radio, electronics, emergency communications)
m.. explain how amateur radio helped for hurricane Katrina, Haiti earthquake, current wild fires, etc.
n.. have some fun with the boys and leaders
Regards,
Ralph Phillips
