Rusty and I have been working for a couple years to foster a relationship with the scouts in Houston.
It is starting to bear fruit.
The latest information is below.
I would like to open discussions regarding two big scout activities (items 3 & 4 below) at the club meeting this Saturday.

Ralph – KE5HDF
1. Rusty attended the Twin Bayou district leader round table for boy scouts.
I have followed up with them by e-mail and waiting to hear back regarding JOTA or other activities with the scouts.
2. OFARC is on the agenda for the Aquila district leaders round table Sept 10.
I don’t know how many minutes they will let us have, but hope we we will have time to describe amateur radio, JOTA, and the associated merit badges.
I believe we will be addressing both the Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
The meeting is at Bellaire United Methodist Church at 4417 Bellaire Blvd
I plan on attending, but would like at least one other radio operator to attend also in case the two talks are separate but at the same time.
3. We have been asked to attend Webelos Woods on Saturday Oct. 24.
The event will be held at St. Paul’s Presb. church on Bellaire where it intersects with Hwy 59.
I don’t yet know what time it will start or end, but have given some thought to what should present.
My suggestions (probably 2 people can cover it, but we should provide 2 shifts of 2 people each):
a.. 2M/70cm voice activity
b.. 20M voice activity
c.. have 2 or 3 morse practice keys/sounders and explain the code (I can provide)
d.. post the amateur radio mission statement (basically service and be prepared) (I can provide)
e.. PSK31 rcv only station (I can provide)
f.. briefly describe the 3 merit badges we can support
g.. have some fun with the boys & leaders
4. JOTA is Oct 17 & 18 this year.
I propose we set up at the lodge and try our best to host a station at some scout location
My suggested activities are (these will need 3-4 members to staff everything; may need two shifts of people):
a.. 2M/70cm voice activity
b.. 20M voice activity
c.. PSK31 station (I can provide)
d.. world/US maps to show locations we contact
e.. have 2 or 3 morse practice keys/sounders and explain the code (I can provide)
f.. open an old tube type recvr and modern rig to show the differences (I have some we can use)
g.. post the amateur radio mission statement (basically service and be prepared) (I can provide)
h.. describe how amateur radio and scouting have similar goals & can complement each other
i.. explain what amateur radio is and how it works WITH current social media or when social media fails
j.. describe the stuff we do
k.. hang poster showing careers that use skills you can learn in amateur radio (I can provide)
l.. display/describe the 3 merit badge books related to amateur radio (radio, electronics, emergency communications)
m.. explain how amateur radio helped for Katrina, Haiti earthquake, current wild fires, etc.
n.. have some fun with t he boys and leaders
