Yes, it’s lots of fun if the bands are cooperative. Reading the rules is a
good idea but in case they kinda flood your engine, here are two things you
need to know:

We are in CQ Zone 5. So when I make a contact I say the signal report
(always 59) and my zone. I say “Five nine five” or “Five nine oh five.”

Contacts between stations in the 48 contiguous USA states are worth zero
points. So, when USA stations are calling CQ they do not want to work us,
may ignore our calls to them, and may be snotty if they do answer us. So
don’t call them. Alaska and Hawaii are fair game. Go get ‘em.

(I’m so old, I know what “flood your engine” actually means and even did it
a few times.)
