New River Valley Amateur Radio Club
Meeting held at the Blacksburg Fire House. In addition, a simultaneous Zoom
session was held.
Meeting called to order at 7:15 PM
Welcome from Cam Coble, President
Introduction of officers
*Reports*
Secretary’s Report – Edward Lener
The November meeting minutes were sent to the club reflector on 1/18.
(There was no December meeting) No corrections or additions were received.
Treasurer’s Report – Steve Allen
Membership renewals for 2024 continue to come in. Please get them in if you
have not already done so. Spent $249 on door prizes for the annual Eat and
Meet event.
WinLink Update – Danny Wylam.
Had to reset the computer but otherwise things are working well.
Repeater Update – Mike Herring
Everything seems to be working well. Let him know of any issues.
Club Donation Acknowledgements – Cam Coble
There were several donations made for the Eat and Meet event.
· Kay and Carter Craigie - Books
· Jim Hassal - Ozark Patrol
· Kathy Williams - Croquet projects
· Patrick Lloyd - Tumblers and Kenwood Cap
· Pete Burkey - Bungee cords
*Old Business*
January Eat and Meet – Christopher Peters and Jim Hassall coordinated the
event. Held at Sal’s in Radford like last year but had a larger room this
time which worked well. 18 people were in attendance and had enough door
prizes for two rounds.
Club Shirts – Cam Coble
Discussed options for club shirt. Decided on a black Nike polo shirt with
club logo. Call sign will be optional for an added fee. Want to put in a
single order all at once to get the best rate.
*New Business*
Winter Field Day Planning – Cam Coble
Event will be Saturday, Jan 27th at the Appalachian Conference Center in
Dublin. Want to have two setup teams, one for the stations and associated
equipment and the other for the antenna and feedline. Because the January
meeting was only one week before the event the club officers authorized
purchase of a new triplexer covering 10/15/20 meters. Since there is a
limit of $250 for such purchases in the club bylaws Steve Allen paid the
difference. Jim Hassell made a motion that the club reimburse Steve and
the vote was unanimous.
Each year the club makes a $100 donation to the City of Refuge in Pulaski
as a thank you for use of the Randolph Park location during Field Day. Until
now we have not done anything similar for Winter Field Day. Pete Burkey
made a motion, seconded by Jim Hassall to make a $100 donation to the
Appalachian Conference Center.
Triple Crown Race Event – Cam Coble
Club has been approached to provide support for a new race event in Catawba
and New Castle. Need to clarify expectation. Will need a map of route and
checkpoints. Want to focus on providing emergency and essential
communications only.
New Member Applications. Had four new member applications. Each was
reviewed and voted on in turn and approved for membership.
· Kevin Carroll, KQ4JVP
· Henry Bibb, N3ZE
· Rick Swink, KQ4LZW
· Sarah Over, KQ4NQO
*Blings n Things* – “Old goals / New goals”
Members talked about their ham radio goals from last year and new ones for
2024.
Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.
There were a total of 16 attendees (14 in-person, and 2 on Zoom)
