On the contrary to 'wasted' money, I use my RTL-SDR along with my current
rig to provide a waterfall display, and it's extremely useful. I have
tapped my rigs first IF for direct injection into the RTL-SDR, so it sees
everything that comes in the rig. I also have the software tracking the
same frequency, so a simple tap on my screen will move my radio to that
frequency. My purchase became a valuable supplement to my current station.
Depending on the model you purchased, the software used and the antenna you
are using, your mileage may vary.
If you are going to test the reception of HF with anything, I would suggest
having a resonant antenna for proper evaluation. Otherwise, you're likely
to receive more IF from non-interested frequencies that could overwhelm the
front-end of the receiver and give mixed results.
