Hello all,

There is still some spots that we could use someone to operate, or if nothing else have a 2nd/buddy to help out here. Sorry it may not have been as clear before, but walking to the locations isn’t necessary, but may be helpful. We’ll have a Jeep club out there helping out with transportation this year, so hopefully things are faster this year. Let me know ASAP if you are interested and I can forward on some more information.

The weather might be cold/cool, but the sun should be out this year!

Subject: Communication Opportunity for Local Hams - Nov 9th.

Others have expressed interest for EmComm opportunities. This would be a great event to get practice.

There's a need for ham radio communications for a race that's coming up in two weeks. I've worked with these folks some as they also do the Mountains of Misery event and others. The race is called the Old Glory Trail Runs (http://www.triadventure.com/old-glory-ultra/). It's on November 9th outside Glen Lyn, VA. It actually crosses the state line 6 or 8 times on the course. Specifically, it's on a piece of private property called Kairos Wilderness Resort (http://kairosresort.com/). The race starts at 8am. Last year was the first year for the race and there were some hiccups, but hopefully they are smoothed out this year. I think we wrapped up just before sunset around 5pm in the evening.

The race has 5 aid stations for the runners but only at 3 locations (2 locations have 2 "stations" each). So, we need 1 ham at each aid station and one at the finish (4 total). Hams will be necessary for this race - there's no cell signal at all. The terrain is pretty mountainous and the aid stations are remote (think along fire roads or dirt trails in the woods). Not expecting any generators or external power here; bringing your own batteries and a backup or 2 will be good. The "as the crow flies" distance between locations is not very much and last year HTs on 2m simplex worked well enough.

Any ham with a 4-wheeler is welcome to bring it - the resort is set up as an atv riding destination. It'd certainly be helpful too since 2 of the aid stations will only be accessible by foot or by atv. However, it's not necessary here as there should be access to a side-by-side atv with a bed on the back. Last year there were long, long waits for rides on the atv's, so it might be preferable to get in early and hike out on foot. If you can't, not a problem.

I've got 2 people (including myself) committed for now, but I need a few more operators at least in order to pull this off. With the minimum amount of operators, we'll need to plan to be out there for most of the day and likely self-supporting for food.
