[nrv-hams] A sImplex net question

Last Tuesday, I was running at 50 watts off my main antenna and
send/receive audio with Net Control was "normal" (S meter said 4/9 on
receive).   However, I could not hear any of the other participants though
I think they could hear me.  The weird thing is that when (I assume) they
were transmitting, my S-meter was hitting up to 9/9 but I heard no audio -
as if they were broadcasting a strong carrier with no audio modulation.

It seemed that Net Control was receiving them (sometimes), but neither my
base station nor a nearby HT even broke squelch (despite an apparent 9/9
signal) except when Net Control (at 4/9) was talking.

Any ideas what is happening?
