Hi, N4NRV,
I just wanted to invite you to the VTARA meeting tonight (March 16, 2016),
as we have a very special guest speaker, Steve Floyd, W4YHD.
We will be meeting Steve for dinner at the Cellar at 5 PM. The presentation
start at 7:15 in Squires 342. You are invited to both.
Steve will be presenting on the design, construction, and operation of the
High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program “HAARP” Research Station
located in Gakona, Alaska. Steve was the Chief RF design engineer for the
HAARP facility for 18 years and remains an active consultant to the
program. Steve is currently a Principal Systems Engineer at General
Dynamics Corporation in Fairfax, Va.
Quoting Josh, KF4YLM:
"HIGHLY recommend the HAARP talk.
There's something for everyone in HAARP -- VERY interesting problems and
profound solutions are involved at a unique facility planted in a harsh
environment, with discussion topic categories ranging from SDR, electrical
beam-forming, antennas (both electrical and mechanical challenges), power
(60Hz to HF), heating and cooling, radar surveillance, and beyond.
In broadcast, we call the 50kW+ stations "Blowtorches". By the same
analogous comparison, HAARP would qualify as a Saturn V rocket engine.
Steve, W4YHD, a VT/WUVT/VTARA alum, was instrumental in bringing HAARP up
to its legendary power status going from about 30 10kW transmitters to 180
10kW transmitters, and he has a wealth of knowledge about this facility.
This is truly a unique presentation!"
73,
Nathaniel, W2NAF
