The 2013 ARRL International DX Phone Contest runs from 0000 UTC Saturday,
March 2 through 2359 UTC Sunday, March 3. In local time that means the start
is at 7 PM Friday night, and the end point is 6:59 PM Sunday evening.
As in the CW version of the contest, stations in Canada and the contiguous
48 states of the USA work everybody else in the world, and vice versa. The
exchange for us is a signal report and our state, and for the DX it's a
signal report and their transmit power. The signal report is always 59.
DX stations who are running 1,000 watts usually abbreviate that figure.
You'll hear "kilowatt" or "one K" for example.
We can say "Virginia" or "Victor Alpha." Saying the letters "V A" isn't
ideal, because it can be confused with "P A," "G A," and so on.
With a Technician license you can work phone on 10 meters from 28.300 to
28.500 MHz. If the band is open, you can work the world. Ten meters was open
for part of the CW contest several weekends ago, so let's hope it cooperates
in the phone event.
73 and have fun - Kay N3KN
