All New River Valley ARC Members,
Next Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, we will first meet for breakfast at the
Shoney's Restaurant on Route 100 in Dublin, at about 8:00 AM, and then move
over to the Dublin Firehouse (on the 2nd floor), and start our work on
populating the 4 bandpass filter printed circuit boards that Donnie Coleman
AB4I has designed and had fabricated for us.
We shall solder into the appropriate places the 40 wound toroid cores we
made at our first work session. And we hope also to solder into place all
the capacitors in their appropriate places. Donnie will explain how these
components are supposed to work together.
We will have 4 work stations, each with a soldering station. So we will need
4 soldering stations, solder, and extension cords, (plus bright warning
tapes to help people see the cords and then to not trip over them!)
I will bring my soldering station, along with water to moisten the cleaning
pads for the tips of the soldering irons. Thus, we will need 3 more
soldering stations.
If you have never soldered anything before, you will especially enjoy
learning how to make good strong connections. It's sort of fun once you get
the hang of it. There will be experienced hams there who will instruct you,
so don't let inexperience hold you back from coming. It is Donnie's and my
hope that any and all club members who can come can get to solder in at
least one or more components. We will have a lot of components to solder
onto the 4 boards, so there will be plenty to do.
John C Lawson, KJ4NGC has been kind enough to make all the arrangements for
the room, and we thank him so very much. We have the room from 9:00 AM until
2:00 PM. Donnie has promised to make us some more of his excellent pictures
and instruction sheets, such as he did for Work Session I. He has already
done a great deal of work already, as you can see. Thanks to him also!
I would appreciate it if you could let me know if you will be bringing a
complete soldering station, as noted above. We need only 4 stations, but
having a few as backup won't hurt.
If you have any questions, please ask me via email, or we can chat before
Monday night's meeting at the library in Christiansburg. Remember, we will
be having a great program on APRS, as well as a discussion regarding the
possible placement of the club's 440 machine, so all talk concerning the
bandpass filters should be done before the formal meeting starts, please.
In any case, I look forward to seeing all our active club members in Dublin
next Saturday morning!
73/88,
Carter N3AO
