[nrv-hams] Shortwave radio

Grundig and Sony are still top performers when it comes to portable SW
radios. (I'm a shortwave listener for those who didn't know, especially on
overseas trips,...except DPRK :-(.)

Their latest radios in this price range ($135 - 140 from Amazon) are:
Sony ICF-SW7600GR
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ICF-SW7600GR-Shortwave-Receiver-Reception/dp/B000
06IS4X/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1302090770&sr=1-1
Grundig G3

XKEW/ref=sr_1_19?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1302090770&sr=1-19

Both allow copy of SSB and CW. (If urls don't work, log onto Amazon and
search shortwave radios, you'll find them)

Both have excellent ratings and reviews to read, however there's another
important consideration, ease of use for an old-time short wave listener
used to twisting knobs. The Sony model is a largely push button type with
all the whistles and bells. I bought a Sony some years ago for my traveling
then sold it because I didn't like the ease of use (maybe that puts me in
the OM category too. :))

The Sony ICF-SW7600GR is push button for tuning but has a volume wheel on
side as well as a tuning wheel for SSB fine tuning.

The Grundig G3 has a twist dial for tuning but with digital readout, and up
and down buttons for volume.

If SSB is not needed one option with an abundance of knobs is the Grundig
S350 at about $100.

sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1302090770&sr=1-3

This model is single conversion I believe compared to double conversion for
others, has analog tuning with digital readout so has a tendency to drift
and reports are just average for shortwave. It is noted for AM and FM
reception.

Here's one good option worth considering.
Tecsun PL-600 $70.
http://www.amazon.com/Tecsun-PL-600-Shortwave-Radio-Reception/dp/B001OOHG08/
ref=sr_1_21?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1302090770&sr=1-21

The PL-600 is a Chinese brand like Kaito and has good reviews (double
conversion, includes SSB coverage and knobs for tuning, BFO and volume.) (I
bought a Kaito KA1103 to replace my Sony but wouldn't recommend because of
the funky volume control, otherwise it's great). Check out the reviews on
the PL-600.

Subject: [nrv-hams] Shortwave radio

I have a request to suggest a good SW radio for a birthday present for a 83
YO man whose good radio gave out some ten years ago. His wife is willing to
spend up to $100-150 for a good one. I am not current with that stuff, the
last SW radios I had were a Sony 2010 and a Grundig Yachtsman, many years
ago. They were both great. I suspect that now their are brands I have
never heard of!

Thanks in advance if you have some experience with this kind of thing.

Ron
