And the FCC will look at that 100+KC's of empty space and sell it off to the
highest bidder leaving 5KC's for the digital guys. Or the FM crowd will move
down and claim it. Parking on 144.174 only means we don't need that extra
spectrum for weak signal.

What about FSK441 and now MSK144? I don't recall this much talk about
digital in VHF contesting when those modes were popular (and still are) Are
those also not modes that use software for decoding?

I admit I'm certainly no VHF expert. I will agree with Jim that these modes
have allowed my small station to experience some really fun times over the
past couple years.

Whenever I go check other modes I rarely hear others. (Those that know me
know I'm a big cw fan). It was that way for me before FT8. If I do get to
144.200 I hear a QSO take place and as I wait my turn, I hear that station
asked "Have other bands"? And then they go off somewhere else.

This hobby will continually evolve. We can choose to embrace and try the new
things or not do so. That's what makes it so much fun for me.

What about RTTY, the human ear can't decode it either, yet it has had a firm
place in ham radio and contesting for many decades.
