If you are interested in light communication such as was discussed at
the Aurora Conference last year, you may want to join the UKNanowaves
email group at Google Groups.io. In recent years, the UKNanowave group
on Yahoo has been the most active group of experimenters that I have
found. That group is moving to Groups.io since Yahoo is shutting down
the email forums. The number of people who have joined the group is
fairly small so far, but I expect more people will jump over as the
Yahoo shutdown date gets closer.
If your light communication interest is solely restricted to the
system that was shown last year at Aurora, you may want to make sure
Donn WA2VOI has you on his email list of local NLRS members who are
building systems. :-)
Remember that modern light comms use high-power LEDs, not lasers as it
was done 20 years ago. Recent laws have made it hazardous to your
liberty and bank account to shine even a low power laser into the sky.
OTOH, high-power LEDs expanded to 8" or 10" beams of light have proven
more resistant to atmospheric issues and have been used to make Q's of
over 100 miles, assuming you can get enough height.....

The things they do not tell you are usually the clue to solving the problem.
