256k?? OUCH..
I didn't even know anyone was offering that high speed dialup anymore!
It looks like your in Comcast land up there, you could get 10mpbs for $29.95
a month, I'm not a big fan of Comcast but it seems like its 50/50 from its
customers, some love it, some hate it, some just deal with it. But the
price vs speed isn't bad, since you were on 256k DSL I'm sure your not a
heavy user anyway, so anything like peak usage time slowdowns and usage caps
probably wouldn't be a concern for you. The reason I say that is I have
friends up there that tell me there Comcast drops during peak times to
1-2mbps, but that’s already far more then you have now anyway. I guess the
other factor would be how much your paying in comparison though as well.
Down here in SW MN we have a scattered DSL provider base, nothing solid or
large scale, but the cable internet is quite good. For $29.95 a month here
you could get 30mpbs downstream and 3mbps upstream, whereas the DSL in the
same town costs $49.95 for 3mbps/512k.
One good thing about Comcast is I think they still do their 30 day no
contract cancel at any time evaluation periods, so you could try it, if its
not reliable or has issues or slower then your used to, though I cant see
that coming from 256k but its possible however remotely that might be, and
then decide from there. I'm sure there is a lot of other providers in the
metro area that I'm not familiar with, however I can say one thing, stay
away from any cellular based, or cellular company owned, internet service.
They are always more expensive in the end and much more restrictive on data
usage. I generally push my customers to get cable internet, simply because
the DSL down here is still on twisted pair, no fiber, and it never reaches
the rated speeds or anything close to it. Sure cable can slow down with
heavy users and traffic but even at its worst during peak hours I still see
50-60% of my rated speed. I get 150mbps downstream and 20mbps upstream, and
I generally see around 160-170 and 30-35, peak usage drops down to around
80-90 and 20-25, still more then sufficient.

Hi All
This is off topic for our reflector, but I wanted to tap the collective
knowledge of our members, many of whom work in the IT business.
I have had low speed (256K) DSL for years but the ISP I use is really
starting to fail in their mission.
What are NLRS members using at home and are you happy with speed / cost ?
Private emails or public postings are hugely appreciated.....
Thanks
