If you have drive problems making errors which could be drive or
interface I have three versions of a super patient file copying program
in the directory: www.geraldj.networkiowa.com/papers/Recovery/ compiled
for DOS, Linux, and 32 bit windoze. It reads one byte at a time checking
the error flag. If there is an error it waits a bit and tries again up
to 65,000 tries. That makes is potentially very slow but it has
recovered files from failing drives because of that patience. Its
command line driven. Slowcopy inpath/input.fil outpath/output.fil but
with the backslash in Linux.

I had a dos drive that dos could not read. With slowcopy running from a
floppy disk, I recovered the entire 8 MB drive contents, but it took
nearly three days.
