My hats off to Donn and the team for the microwave tune-up session today at
Jon's QTH. It was a good turnout and we all benefited from a little stress
testing. It continues to amaze me how many hidden problems come to the
surface that would otherwise have been discovered in the field with dire
consequences.
In my case, I need to implement a short circuit proof +PTT within my 2 meter
IF cable and fix my battery voltage stabilizer before I can proceed any
further. Also, being able to check out the return loss on my big dish feed
(with and without an isolator) has allowed me to proceed on this much
delayed project. This is all very helpful information and promotes
additional microwave interest within NLRS group. Keep up the good work!

So now it's back to assembling my VHF rover setup for the trip to Austin to
attend the CSVHFS Conference. Hope to see y'all there.

Be sure to join us at the 48th Annual CSVHF Conference on July 24-27 in
Austin, TX. Visit www.csvhfs.org for more information.

Subject: [NLRS] uW Tune up this Saturday

To follow up on Jon's note earlier ("NLRS Breakfast and uW Tune Up"), the
kinds of things we'll try to measure:

IF Radio:
power out, Frequency, and
Mic gain (or Data gain for WSJT, etc.) to provide clean signals w/o
splatter TX stability

XVRTR:
Frequency, power out, RX and TX gain
TX Stability
Pre-amp: NF (?)
Cable losses
Ant feed Return loss (but NOT gain -- no antenna range)

System:
Sun Noise
Pwr amp output
We also want to try to take a look at system degradation when multiple
operating frequencies are in use at the same time and location. What
minimum freq seperation is needed; what effect, if any, does the use of XTAL
vs PLL LOs have, etc.

Try to remember to bring the manual(s) for your i.f. radios so we know how
to access and change the mic gain/dat input gain settings. Likewise for the
Hi/Lo power settings. Same kind of date is needed for your XVRTR to adjust
the TX and RX gain settings.

Bring your whole system, including tripod and DC power both for the sun
noise measurements and system degradation.

This can't be a "repair" session... that takes too much time per system.
The best we can do is make minor adjustments and identify big problems so
you can work on them later at home.

See you then. Hopefully, it will be a good morning/early afternoon
(sunshine and a --mostly-- clear sky).
