Its a 10K pot supposed to be at maximum resistance for maximum gain. 
Just happens I have a supply of 10K 0805 resistors (buying 50 was a dime 
more than buying 5) and that chip just fits between the pins of the pot. 
And it work. I did the same for the intermittent volume control. I might 
have to put a pot on and external speaker in some places. The 
replacement main dial encoders arrived, but without mounting hardware 
which is going to slow that project.
