I have been liking my FT857Ds for some time. Hate to say it, I'm in the
market for another. Their noise blanker works much better than the IC706
reputedly and I'm finding VHF and UHF sensitivity decent. Not to say a
preamp and power amp wouldn't help. I'll experiment with that this year.

I've not yet found a DSP noise reduction scheme that's better than my
ears and that leaves me with a background I can not process in my head
to enhance that processed S/N better. The 857D DSP isn't as effective at
increasing the S/N of a really weak CW signal as the optional mechanical
filter. I can't detect any S/N improvement through the DSP, bit I can
with the mechanical filter.

The 857 being very compact replaces 127 front panel buttons with two
sets of menus, a few entries that are reached from other front panel
buttons, some just take grinding through the menu.
