As a 'crazy folk out in the Rockies" I can comment on travel to Isle
Royale. I am guessing that you intend to land at Washington Harbor rather
than at Rock Harbor.

When I last packed across the Island [1971] there was a ranger
station/lookout about twenty feet off the ground on top of Mt. Desor. If
you could arrange to operate from there you would be above most of the
vegetation in all directions with a clear shot at everything from Thunder
Bay to Duluth to Madeline Island to maybe even the Mackinac bridge area.
Somewhere I have a photo of that station which shows how nice it would be
to use as a location for something like 10 Ghz.

I have operated Field Day [1968] from John's Island and fortunately we had
a crank up tower. Unless you find someplace along the shore on the South
edge of the island you are going to have vegetation problems if you only
have a tripod. My recollection is that there is virtually no beach. The
vegetation is right to the water's edge and in many cases hanging out over
the water.
