Ok, so this is going to be a little off topic but not so far as we use
phones, EchoLink, private phone interconnections to radio, and VOIP in
radio. I would like to start a discussion here as I know that we have some
current technology phone experts (I am stuck in the hard phone switch, PBX,
CO, and POTS experience). I am surprised that W0TAR did not ring in on this
thread earlier(pun intended). Please review below. I have a Magic Jack as a
cheap solution that I have carted all over the country with me since 2008
for when I had no cell service but had WiFi (This happens often on Indian
Reservations). It has worked well enough but then I had this below
discussion with Bill and Ted. I called Bill in the 218-326 exchange(Qwest)
with my MJ and had a nice long 14 minute discussion with no problems and
good clarity. After Ted's response to me I called my sister in the
218-638-xxxx exchange(Citizens Telecom Co Mn-frontier Citizens Com-mn) and
experienced Ted's description calling her but she can call me on the MJ
number. I have started a communication between MJ and Frontier on this. I
have kept my POTS line because I like having the battery at the CO for
dependability but 60.00 a month is getting a little hard to justify.
So my real question is, what are the cheap dependable VOIP choices or
options out there? Lets leave Vonage out of this as they are really only
marginally cheaper if I am going to give up my real wire pair back to the
CO.

Earl,
Glad it works for you but that has not been my experience. Or the experience
of a lot of other folks. Do a google on MagicJack blocked exchanges and you
will see what I am talking about. Here is a quick list I pulled of a site.
Yes it is a bit old but it was the first one I could lay hands on. And
before you start thinking "oh they fixed all that", there are very recent
post indicating it is still a ongoing problem.

If it is working for you great. I had mine for a year and it worked great
then I started not being able to call a lot of exchanges. Sort of works just
didn't cut it so in the junk drawer it went.

Before you even consider kicking your current phone provider to the curb you
better make sure you can complete calls to the areas most important to you.
MagicJack has a well documented history of blocking a number of exchanges.

This is only an issue if the incoming caller is in 218-xxx-xxxx
without
unlimited LD service. You can still keep a local POTS line with no
LD for
local incoming and outgoing calls which is normally pretty limited
for a
rural LEC anyway.

Welcome to the fiber. I think you will like it.
FYI stay away from Magic Jack. They are ok if you want to call the
dark side
of the moon. But the issue with them is that they promise you that
you can
call there but don't bank on it. The issue is that they Magic Jack
want to
stiff the local phone co. for interconnect fees (like all other real
phone
co. do) so they end up being put on the S--t List. You can not get
a local
number so if you want to use it to make a local long distance call
or even a
local call into Grand Rapids it wont work. You will end up having
the same
problem in other parts of the country also. Anywhere served by one
of the
small local phone companys. MJ seems to operate under the radar of
the
larger outfits. I have a MJ and it ended up getting tossed in a
drawer for
this very reason. If you ask MJ they tell you the problem is with
the local
phone company but not the real reason why. BTW I have not every
tried to
call the dark side of the moon but it may well be that they have a
problem
of MJ looking for a free ride from them also.
I don't have much good to say about the outfit. Their customer
service is
VERY poor. When I started having problems (they got away with this
for some
time) they played dumb. After I did a lot of research and found out
what was
going on and put it to the third "supervisor" they said they
"where having
problems with some uncooperative local phone companies" and that
they would
refund my renewal if I shipped them the MagicJack that I purchased
several
years earlier. That is when it hit the bottom of the junk drawer.
