First, let me say that I was recently elected President of the TCFMC (Twin
City FM Club) and have started to full fill these duties. Mike Sigelman has
step down from this role. FM and repeaters was my first mode in ham radio so
I feel a little more tuned in to that mode. I will be promoting the new FM
only category for the contests on the various swap shops and FM repeater
nets in the coming weeks for the January contest.

With this new mode we have a real chance of creating a lot of new interest
I guess I would feel that it would be better to stay off the national
simplex frequencies for the most in the future but for this new FM-only it
might be OK for this first year to help generate interest. Considering 2M,
we are still in a 15 KHz band plan above 146.00 so 146.46 would OK but the
next channel up would be 146.475. FM'ers for the most part adhere to the
channel spacings. I have no dispute with the 146.52 as I believe there
should be set aside from contests a 2m frequency that can be depended upon
in case of need or emergancy.

We have a new chance to set some courteous standards. I propose that we do
something similar to what we do in SSB with the calling frequency. In that,
we work either side of the calling frequency during busy times. This of
course would be as best fits within the Mn Repeater Council band plan or
accepted simplex frequencies. This would set the following standards.

52.490 Contest operating frequency
52.510 Contest operating frequency
52.525 Contest calling frequency / National simplex calling frequency

146.445 Contest operating frequency
146.460 Contest calling frequency
146.475 Contest operating frequency

223.500 Contest calling frequency / National simplex calling frequency
223.520 Contest operating frequency
223.540 Contest operating frequency

445.975 Contest operating frequency
446.000 Contest calling frequency / National simplex calling frequency
446.025 Contest operating frequency

1294.475 Contest operating frequency
1294.500 Contest calling frequency / National simplex calling frequency
1294.525 Contest operating frequency

In the MRC band plan 223.480 is a 1200 baud digital packet channel(I
personally would rather see that put back as a voice simplex channel but
Doug can chime in on that as he is more involved in TwinsLan). On 6m there
are 3 national recognized simplex frequencies which could be the best
possibility for long haul FM. On 70cm the MRC channel spacing is 12.5KHz
but to sort of follow a some what standard convention I chose the 25KHz
channels for this purpose. I think 147.57 is used by the TV guys as their
voice coordination channel.

There is my 2 pennies.

Hello NLRS land -

As you are aware the ARRL has added the Single Operator Three Band and
FM-Only operating categories to the January, June, and September VHF
contests. Regarding the FM-Only operating category the League is seeking
input via their VUAC members as to suggested FM simplex frequencies.

The FM calling frequencies of 52.525, 223.5, 446.0 and 1294.5 are allowed
under the rules with the standard caveat of not monopolizing them. 146.52 is
specifically not allowed due to the still-existing Wilderness Protocol as
referenced at the beginning of the ARRL Repeater Directory; it's on p.23 of
the 2012-2013 edition.

If you have some thoughts as to what FM frequencies would be good for
NLRS-land, please forward your suggestions along to me so that I can pass
them on to the League. I think 52.525, 223.5, and 446.0 are just fine for
us, and perhaps 146.46 .48 or ? Those who are more tuned in to the FM
community may have some suggested simplex frequencies to avoid?

73, Jon
