Well, despite the comments by others, I feel much more encouraged by
this year's September contest than last year. Even if you take away the
favorable propagation, I found activity to be up.
Others have downplayed the aurora, but it was the highlight of my
weekend. I worked AU on 6m from 2149-2313z, and on 2m from 2205-2224z;
also one Q on 222 with NT0V at 2222. On 6m I added 25 Qs and 20 grids,
and on 2m I added 10 Qs and 6 grids I would have not gotten otherwise.
(Best DX on both bands was K1WHS in FN43/Maine; on 2m Dave was the ONLY
station I worked in the FN field! What a signal.)
Even taking out the AU, on 6m I was up to 70 Qs from 57, and on 2m this
year 87 up from 71. Other bands: 222 36/27, 432 53/36, 902 12/6, 1296
16/11. The only band with a noticeable hardware improvement is 1296.
One factor in this may be that people are becoming accustomed to looking
for me again.
Thanks to WA0VPJ/R, KC0P/R and W9SNR/R for a bunch of Qs, though Mel was
the only one that gave me multiple Qs on 1296.
It was nice to hear some activity from IA and NE even without Bruce
traveling right through there. Worked a couple stations each in EN10,
EN31 and EN32, and heard quite a bit of calling from down there.
Activity in the Twin Cities was still pretty low. Couldn't even scare
up a 902 or 1296 from EN35. And Sunday Night Football continues to wipe
out the great bump we used to see in activity; might as well end this
thing at noon!
Mark your calendars now for January 21-22, the VHF Sweepstakes!
73,
Paul W0UC
