For discussions sake, I add a couple more details.
1. The ebay seller is thought to be Baggy Bob--a great guy who
repackaged parts and sold them for reasonable prices at northern
Illinois and southern Wisconsin hamfests throughout the 90's. It
appears he may have relocated. I bought many "blue modules" from
Baggy Bob over the years and they sit, still, unused in my parts
collections. But I had/have good plans for them. I also bought
lots of other good parts. I will contact him and see if he has
parts that might be of interest to BC'ers and NLRS'ers.
2. Some of you have reminded me of the class C nature of the blue
modules. You are correct. But I will say this, a creative and
careful craftsman, WA9O, took the time to go through a bunch of
the blue modules and "characterize" them. This way he could
select "hot" modules. Then he carefully phase combined them.
This is a tedious process in order to maximize output. And by
combining four of the modules (with a driver module), he built the
100w 902 rig that I'm using to this day. I've talked hundreds of
miles on that thing. Now, indeed, my SSB sounds "crunchy". But
stations on the other end keep QSL'ing my info :-) . So yes,
linear would be better. But the blue modules were the only thing
available for a LONG time. So hams make do with what they can get
their hands on for not much $ !!.
If some of you have some more thoughts on Class C, other classes,
linearity, or whatever, please add to this discussion.
3. I've been asked "how" to bias the Mitsubishi modules for AB
operation. I'm drawing a blank. I got asked some great questions
in an email but don't have the answers. If you can look at the
spec sheet and make some suggestions how to actually do that in a
DEM 902 transverter environment, please share circuit descriptions
or sketches. Thanks.
