It was the best 2m Es opening that I can recall, Jon. Actually, I caught 2
openings on 2 yesterday. The first was to XE2 (DL95) and Texas. The 2nd
one began about 2330 UTC and lasted for nearly 3 hours. I worked 66 stations
on 2m Es from Texas to Pennsylvania, plus VE6TA in DO33. I worked 9 new
grids on 2m, which is a rare occurrence for me (now 275 grids on that band).
I even heard some Es on 146.52, but quit trying to work any DX on that
frequency after 2 locals complained that 146.52 was the SOUTH DAKOTA FM
simplex frequency. When I tried to explain that I was hearing Texas stations
on FM as well as on SSB, one said "well then, maybe you just need to go back
to sideband." Sigh.
I tried 222 a number of times because I still need Florida on that band, but
I heard nothing up there. Neither did I hear any reports of others making a
contact on 222.
Six meters was still open to the east coast with 50 dB over S9 signals when I
went to bed at 2 AM, and the band was full of beacons when I left for work
this morning. I'm wondering if today will be a day for Europe into the midwest
on 6, but unfortunately I have to spend the next 24 hours here at work.
